More portability updates. Now compiles cleanly vs glibc, libc5, and uclibc
(except for mkfs_minix and fsck_minix -- and it doesn't yet link vs uclibc due
to missing stuff in the library).

Updates to a number of apps to remove warnings/compile errors under libc5.
Tested under both libc5 and libc6 and all seems well with these fixes.
