termencoding: change "need root" to "use root"
...
This allows root to be removed from the boot runlevel which is needed
sometimes when the root fs is mounted read-only.

Convert the style:
var=$((${var} + 1))
to:
: $(( var += 1 ))
The latter is easier to read imo.
